Microsoft Lumia 435 Tips and Tricks

If you prefer not to have the ‘Sent from my Windows Phone’ message at the bottom of emails, then here is how to remove it:

Go into Mail and press the 3 dots at the bottom of the screen. Select Settings and change it there

This is useful if you don’t want people to know that emails are being sent from your phone.

To import your contacts from your SIM card, then insert the SIM and turn the phone on.

Then go to People. Hold near the top of the screen and select Import SIM contacts.

To turn on Caps lock, double press the Shift key.

To turn it off, simply double tap Shift again to disable.

To PIN people to your start menu, go to your People list and find the person you want to add.

Then Press and Hold on an item and select Pin to start

Sometimes, especially if you’re going abroad, you will want to save maps to view when your phone is offline.

This isn’t an obvious feature to find, but you should go to Settings – Applications – Maps – Download Maps.

From here you can download whole regions, countries or continents to your phone for viewing when you don’t have a data connection. Be warned that this can take up a lot of storage space however. For example the whole of the UK might take around 500Mb of storage space.

You can use your smartphone as an Xbox controller.

First, download and install the Xbox SmartGlass App (formerly known as My Xbox Live). Once this is installed go to Xbox hub and make sure your Xbox is turned on and connected to your Wi-Fi router. Then make sure the phone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

If that is all setup, then the App will sign you in and you can start controlling your Xbox with the phone.

When viewing your photos or videos, you can view them in filmstrip mode. Open a picture or video, then pinch it as if you shrink it. You can then view several in filmstrip mode.

This will work better when your phone is tilted into landscape mode.

If you are taking photos where there is a high contrast between light and dark colours or shapes (for example taking a photo of someone with the sun in the background), then there is a function that will improve these photos.

Launch the Camera app and then choose the Gear icon in the bottom right of the screen. Scroll down and select Wide Dynamic Range and change this to On

A great feature of recent Windows Phone versions is what’s called Storage Sense which can help you manage your phone and SD card storage.

If your device does have expandable storage and you have an SD card, then Storage Sense helps you move photos, music and Apps from your phone storage to your SD card.

You can also use it to see which content or which Apps are consuming the most storage space. From here you can either delete or uninstall the offenders.

To get directions to a location, you need to begin from the home screen. Then go to Apps – Maps and select Directions.

Then enter an address or place of interest, like a shop or restaurant and press Go.

Then choose either Walking or Driving. The phone will then calculate a route.

To show real-time traffic information select the More button and select Show Traffic.
