How to decide
When choosing headphones, the main factors to consider are: price, quality and headphone type. Taking a moment to consider these factors will not only ensure you get the best value headphones, but also the best sound quality to listen to your music or movies. Remember that the Oneplus 7 comes with a standard 3.5mm stereo plug meaning all headphones will work on your device.
Price vs quality
As with most things, you get what you pay for and headphones are a very good example of this. Portability is the key advantage of ear bud style headphone as they can be stored almost anywhere; although it often means a few seconds of de-tangling before use. Ear buds are ideal for running, commuting or using in the office when you want to avoid distractions. Many people also buy two pairs in case one is temporarily missing down the side of the couch!
On ear headphones
– On ear headphones normally sit on top the ear, but don’t enclose the ear completely like the over ear or closed variety. These are handy if you want to store them in a jacket pocket or bag, but the sound can get a little lost out of the sides of the speaker so if you’re in a noisy environment, you may need turn them up in order to hear properly. If you’re moving around a lot they can also dislodge meaning you may need to frequently reposition them. Some people don’t like the bulk of the over ear style, so on ear headphones provide a good compromise between size and quality.
Over ear / closed headphones
– These are designed to completely cover the ear and are often used by DJs, for listening at home or for people who are a little more serious about their listening experience. Some models can fold up, but they are generally less portable than on ear headphones. Prices range from very cheap, up to the most expensive headphones on the market. Because all sound is directed into the ear, they provide the best quality sound and choosing a really top-end pair can be a truly pleasurable listening experience.
Noise cancelling headphones
– All of the above headphones also come in noise cancelling varieties. This works by filtering out background noises such as airplane engines or train noises. They are perfect for commuting and long distance train or plane travel, however they are often bulkier due to the need for some kind of battery pack. Some cheaper varieties might advertise passive noise cancelling which can simply means the plastic or foam casing naturally blocks out noises, so be careful of that. We recommend you choose active noise cancelling which employ a special technology to generate their own sound waves, which then cancels out the unwanted waves. Shop for: Over ear / closed headphones
If you want to remove the Google Search bar, simply tap and hold the bar and a remove button will appear at top of the screen, drag the bar to that remove button, and the bar will disappear.
If this is not working, go to Settings – Applications – Application manager. Then swipe from right to left so you are on the All screen. Scroll to Google search and press Disable.
While the stock standard keyboard is fine, there are much better keyboards available for the Oneplus 7.
First, you need to go to the Play Store and download one. Try searching for the word ‘keyboard’ and you will see a number of options.
One of the best keyboards is a keyboard called Swiftkey, which is a top-rated App. This will literally change the way you feel about your phone as the standard keyboard can be quite a frustrating experience.
Download your chosen keyboard and go through any install steps that you are presented with.
If you see a warning saying the keyboard will collect all information (including credit cards) just ignore this. This is just a security feature that Android shows for every third-party keyboard that you install.
Then, go to the App you want to type in. You should now see a little Keyboard icon on the row at the bottom of your screen, towards the bottom-right corner. Press that icon and you can switch between all of the keyboards you have installed.
Some other notable keyboards that work on the Oneplus 7 are GO Keyboard and Gboard (the Google Keyboard). Download and install your keyboard app of choice. Once that’s done, follow these steps to switch your current keyboard to that newly installed one:
- You can click on your newly installed keyboard app (icon).
- Most of them can assist you on how to switch your keyboard.
- Just follow the instructions from the new keyboard app.
How to Switch Your Phone’s Default Keyboard to A New One
You can follow the steps above because most keyboard apps can assist you when it comes to switching the default keyboard to theirs. However, you can also do it manually by going to your Phone Settings. Just follow these steps:
- Go to Settings and scroll down or look for the “System” sub-menu.
- Under “System,” tap “Language and Keyboard” or “Language and Input.”
- Tap “Default Keyboard” and select the new keyboard app.
Depending on your unit and model, this method could vary. For those who can’t find the “Default Keyboard” option, you can follow these steps:
- Under “Language and Input,” you need to look for Virtual Keyboards → Manage Keyboards.
- Tap your keyboard of choice to activate it.
- You will get a message of confirmation. Just tap “OK.”
- Open your keyboard. You can do this by trying to write a message, email or search.
- Then tap the keyboard icon.
- Choose the Input Method (tap on your preferred keyboard).
Done! You can change your Oneplus 7 keyboard’s theme, predictive text, and other settings by opening its menu. You can do this by locating the keyboard icon on your home screen, or by tapping on the settings icon when you open the keyboard for typing.
If you want to remove an entire text message thread, go into Messages and look for the thread. Then long press on it and select Delete thread
Instead of the simple swipe gesture to unlock your phone, you can set a custom one which can be extremely difficult for a thief to guess.
From your homescreen, go to Settings – Personal – Lock screen – and security – Screen lock type and choose Pattern.
It is also a good idea to untick Use visible pattern. Then if someone is watching over your shoulder while you entering your pattern, it will be harder for them to remember the pattern.
If you have forgotten your unlock pattern, then after 5 unsuccessful tries a button will appear saying ‘Forgot pattern’. Press this and you will be asked to enter your Gmail username/password. The phone will then ask for a new unlock pattern. If you don’t have a Gmail account, then you will have to either call your carrier or factory reset your phone.
Having notifications come through on the lock screen can be handy because you don’t have to unlock your phone to see what the notification is about.
The problem with this is that someone may see the content of a notification (a text message for example) which you would like to keep private.
To change this setting to only display that the notification has arrive (rather than the actual content), then go to Settings – Sounds and notifications.
Then under the Notifications section, select Notifications on lock screen.
Select Hide content to only show the notification and not the content itself.
You can also select to turn Lock screen notification ‘ON or OFF’ from this menu.
If you don’t want to hear the shutter sound when you take photos, then there are a few things you can try.
Firstly, some countries have laws to force the phone to play these sounds. Assuming you’re not in one of these countries, then the first thing you can try is to go to the Camera App – Settings – Shutter Sound – Off.
If that doesn’t work, then you can try turning the volume of the phone down or put it in silent mode when taking photos.
The last option is to Root your phone. If you don’t know what that means, then it’s best not to attempt it unless you have thoroughly read about the process. Once Rooted, go to this folder on your phone: /system/media/audio/ui and rename the camerashutter and/or cameraclick OGG files to something else.
Alternatively, on a rooted phone you can use a Root Browser, to edit /system/csc/feature.xml and set the option to TRUE. Then you should be able to go to Camera App – Settings – Shutter Sound – Off.
To access the scientific calculator, simply open the calculator App and rotate the phone to landscape mode.
The calculator will automatically change to a scientific one.
If you like your Apps neatly sorted into folders, then there is a simple way to accomplish this.
First find the first App you would like in a folder. Then choose a second App. Press and hold on the second App and drag it over the top of the first App. They will both combine into a folder.
You can repeat this process to add more.
Once you have done this grouping, you can give specific name to that folder. For that just open the folder (containing different apps), and tap on Unnamed Folder tab and add your desired name.
To enable / disable your notification light, go to Settings – Device – Sounds and notifications – LED indicator.
From here you can choose various options.
This may not be available on all models. An alternative however is to download NoLED from the Play Store, which has many options for incoming notifications.
