To put your phone in flight mode, or offline mode, go to Start – Applications list – Settings. Then press Flight mode.

If you’re abroad and want to translate text or street signs with your camera, then Window Phone provides this great feature.

Be warned that it does require a data connection, so if you’re roaming then make sure you check how much the costs will be.

First, press the search button at the bottom of your phone (three dots) Then press button that looks like an eye to open the Camera. Next, press Scan Text to take a picture of the text and then press Translate.

If it doesn’t work the first time, then try taking the photo straight on, or from a slightly different angle. Once the phone has recognised the text, select a language to translate to and Windows Phone will translate it for you.

When viewing your photos or videos, you can view them in filmstrip mode. Open a picture or video, then pinch it as if you shrink it. You can then view several in filmstrip mode.

This will work better when your phone is tilted into landscape mode.

To find an address on maps, then go to a location by panning and zooming.

Then Press and Hold on a location to drop a pin.

This will give you the address of the location you have selected.

To edit a photo after you have taken it, navigate to your chosen image and press the symbol that looks like three full stops in the bottom right corner. From here, select Edit.

You will now be presented with a number of options such as Crop, Rotate, Auto-fix and Creative Studio.

If the volume of your friends’ posts, comments and tweets becomes too much, you can filter them.

Go to Start, then flick left to the Applications list. Then press Settings – Applications – People. Then select Only show posts from people visible on my contact list.

Alternatively, you can go to Start – People. Then flick to What’s new – All accounts. Then select the account you want to view posts from.

To PIN music or playlists to your start menu, go to your Music player.

Then select the music file or playlist you want.

Then Press and Hold on an item and select Pin to start

If you prefer not to have the ‘Sent from my Windows Phone’ message at the bottom of emails, then here is how to remove it:

Go into Mail and press the 3 dots at the bottom of the screen. Select Settings and change it there

This is useful if you don’t want people to know that emails are being sent from your phone.

To import your contacts from your SIM card, then insert the SIM and turn the phone on.

Then go to People. Hold near the top of the screen and select Import SIM contacts.

If you’re away from a charger and want to conserve your phone’s battery, then go to Settings – Battery Saver. A heart symbol should appear over your battery indicator.

This turns off various features such as push email, and some Apps will be prevented run in the background.

When it is turned on, you can also press Advanced at the top of the screen. From here you can choose when the feature gets automatically turned on, or whether it should be used permanently.
