To protect your phone from kids, Windows Phone comes with a Kids Corner feature.

To activate it, go to Settings – Kids Corner and enable it. You can then enable or disable certain content that you want to prevent access to. Options include games, videos, music and apps.

Once it is setup, swipe from Right to Left and you should see Kids Corner. And then swipe Down to Up to remove the Lock Screen.

If you are browsing a website and read something that you want to find out more about, simply highly the text. Then press the Search / Hardware button. The phone will then search for that highlighted word on Bing. This is much quicker than having to open a new browser Tab and searching manually.

When browsing on your phone you may notice images can be quite blurry or distorted. This is because your network provider is compressing the images before they are downloaded on to your device.

Unfortunately there is no way to override this, but if you have a WiFi connection nearby, then you can turn that on. This will mean that all image downloads come through the WiFi connection, rather than your carrier, and the images should appear normally.

To edit a photo after you have taken it, navigate to your chosen image and press the symbol that looks like three full stops in the bottom right corner. From here, select Edit.

You will now be presented with a number of options such as Crop, Rotate, Auto-fix and Creative Studio.

To change the screen lock timeout, go to Settings – Lock & wallpaper. Then choose the duration before the screen locks.

This is handy so you don’t accidentally bump the keys when the phone is in your pocket. It will also improve your battery life.

If you’re abroad and want to translate text or street signs with your camera, then Window Phone provides this great feature.

Be warned that it does require a data connection, so if you’re roaming then make sure you check how much the costs will be.

First, press the search button at the bottom of your phone (three dots) Then press button that looks like an eye to open the Camera. Next, press Scan Text to take a picture of the text and then press Translate.

If it doesn’t work the first time, then try taking the photo straight on, or from a slightly different angle. Once the phone has recognised the text, select a language to translate to and Windows Phone will translate it for you.

To bookmark a website, go to Start – Internet Explorer.

Then go to a website that you want to bookmark.

Make sure the phone is in Portrait mode. Then press the Favourite button.

Then if necessary you can change the name of the bookmark. Select Ok.

While playing a song, press the Album cover. This will then give you the option to rate the song. Press the heart to Love It. Press it again to Hate It. Then when you sync your phone, it won’t sync the music you don’t like

To add cc and bcc fields to an email, press the 3 dots at the bottom of the screen when composing an email.

You can then select Show cc & bcc.

If you are listening to the radio and like a song, but don’t know the name or artist, your phone can help you. This is similar to the Shazam music service.

Simply open the Bing App and press the Music button. The phone will then search for the song and provide you the song, artist, album cover and a link to purchase the track (or album) from the Zune marketplace.
